During his time as a student, Yanni played in a local rock band and continued to study piano and other keyboard instruments. Upon graduating, when he dedicated himself exclusively to music for one full year and found he was the happiest he had ever been, he said he decided music would be his life's work.
Yanni's parents provided a typical Greek life for the young boy. He grew up fishing, swimming, and going to school like every other boy in his town, with one exception. Yanni was born to compose music. He began to play the piano at age six, but he refused formal piano lessons. As a child, Yanni heard music in his head and he simply wanted to hear it come out of the piano too, so he needed to learn how to play to make that happen. He felt a certain freedom with the keys that might have been crushed under the weight of structured learning.

It has become a modern-day soundtrack to any occasion, and over 500 million people around the world can't wait to hear Yanni's music and to connect to their hearts through his sensual music. His true passion is to inspire people to let go of their inhibitions and embrace their own creativity as artists and express themselves in a unique and unforgettable way. He is also deeply committed to a strong musical education for young people, encouraging music in schools and promoting music diversity and equality.
Yanni's parents encouraged him to practice the piano and other instruments, and he began at the age of four. While he loved music, Yanni also loved water. He played sports all through his childhood, including soccer, basketball, and volleyball, and he even competed on the national swim team. He won many swimming competitions and was selected to represent his country in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. His mother's death shortly before the games thwarted his participation. Yanni accepted a position as a gymnastics coach at the American School of Athens in 1965, and he remained there until 1970 when he returned to the United States to study conducting at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. 827ec27edc
