This is an extremely intense movie, and it's somewhat exhausting. While I might not give a movie this high a recommendation if it wasn't for the fact that Shutter would be a major letdown with subtitles, the film's shot on location in Japan helps to make it seem fresh. The family house is a very authentic version of a Japanese home, and it has an intense, but not overbearing, feel to it. The house, which I believe was renovated to the looks of the house in the film, is also frighteningly similar to the one in the 2004 version -- except it's in the middle of a huge city, rather than a remote rural village.
The ending, which is way more emotional than the 2004 version, leaves you feeling tense, a little disturbed and incredibly satisfied. Taylor is excellent as the determined American woman, doing justice to the character while still keeping her alive in the movie's action. This is a strong female character, and she reminds us that women can have the strength of mind to put the world to rights when the men in their lives are too weak.
The ghosts, which appear in various forms, mostly attack the characters by appearing near them and attacking them, mostly in the dark. When they do appear in the bright light, it's a startling sight. There are times when they're too scary to watch, especially when they're morphing into different shapes. The movie is also chock full of blood, and I found it to be spooky in a gory way, which I generally like.
The house in Shutter is creepy as ever, with two spirits dwelling inside it who are the central antagonists of the film. The spirits are played by actors who had only appeared in Japanese horror films before and are all extremely well-known -- an actor in her early 30s, a man in his late 50s and a teenage boy. The kid, played by Yuji Okada, may be the most entertaining character in the film, and his maniacal action really helps to keep the movie's violence from being too relentless. He, like the ghosts, is a bloodthirsty maniac, and sometimes it's really hard to take the fact that they're just zombies that don't really care who they kill.
