The game features a variety of different enemies, with the main focus being the Reploids. While a few additional enemies have been added to the game's original release, the game is missing a large number of them from later releases. The main reasons for this are that the game was released in North America and Europe in two separate packages. The North American release of the game featured a number of different enemies, while the European release featured only the original twelve Reploids. The Europeans even received a second disc with the original twelve Reploids on it, while the North American version only contained the new enemies. It is unknown if Capcom of Japan did this or if it was done by a licensing company.
Mega Man X7 follows a story line consisting of ten stages, where the player is tasked with taking down the numerous Reploids that have invaded Earth. These stages are split into four chapters; the first, second and third chapters are each three stages long, and the final chapter is a four-stage prologue. Unlike previous Mega Man X games, the player is free to choose his weapon and character at the beginning of each stage, and can switch between them mid-game. Two characters, the warrior-like Axl and the scientist-like Red, are available, and they can be changed at any time via the pause screen. Once started, the game is three-dimensional regardless of how the player chooses to play. Each stage has a safe area at the center where the player can take cover and switch to using Axl's weapons and Red's Plasma Beam weapon, as well as a progression of health-restoring capsules that can restore the player's health to 100%.
